Southland Youth Leadership Academy (SYLA) is a new initiative designed to cultivate leadership and governance skills in youth, preparing them for success in their personal and professional lives.
The purpose of this programme, which is completed over six half-days, is to provide rangatahi with the opportunity to build their leadership capability through their own personal development and by learning from the experience of others.
Each half-day session is made up of three parts:
- Personal growth and self-awareness activities & opportunities
- Guest presenter, visiting speaker and/or field trips
- Reflection and co-design phase.
The Youth Leadership Academy is for youth (18 – 24 years) who have been identified by their educators or employers as having:
- Leadership potential
- A special spark or quality
- An interest in developing personal leadership
- May not have access to leadership opportunities like this but would thrive from it
- Would benefit from being part of a team to contribute to the development of the programme.
At the end of the programme, participants graduate and are invited to become a member of the Southland Leadership Academy Alumni.
The funding to design and deliver the Youth Leadership Academy pilot programme was supported by ILT Foundation, Community Trust South and Te Rourou, One Aotearoa Foundation.
